While we were on the road, driving back to Nairobi, we received devastating word that our dear Gambella village was attacked.
Without adding extra drama the facts are these: a number of armed men (50-100) attacked the village in broad daylight and shot and killed 6 men to send the village scattering to the bush. Then they proceeded to steal 1,000 or more of the Gambellan's animals, and money from their huts.
A very complicated story is emerging... why... who... who financed it... what were the various motives...
The husband of our women's group leader (standing with Mary in this pic) was killed as he and our TCD worker Hussein were running for their lives.
One brave Gambella man lay down next to the school and defended it with his gun.
One child lost a finger to a bullet.
I explain a bit below in the video. If you'd like to help with the village's immediate recovery, you can donate at www.GambellaRecovery.com
The one ray of light in this tragedy so far is that none of the Gambellans' hard-earned development efforts were destroyed. And their resolve to keep developing their village and their lives humbles me.
And I know this kind of thing happens in this part of the world.
But these are our friends.....
